  • - Derby had to play this fixture only two days after they had beaten Millwall Athletic in an F.A. Cup semi-final at Villa Park, Birmingham. This early example of fixture-congestion brought an angry reaction from a County supporter which was published in The Derby Telegraph newspaper the day after the match at Anfield : "It is not a surprise Derby County met with defeat at Liverpool. It is a surprise that the Derby County directors have not had business sagacity enough to foresee this and have insisted on a longer interval between the matches at Birmingham and Liverpool. On Saturday afternoon our men worked like Trojans and bravely acquitted themselves. With only Sunday's rest after all the excitement they were carried off to Liverpool at 1.12 on Monday, arriving there about 4 o'clock, and at 5 o'clock they were called upon to meet a perfectly fresh team, in the pink of condition, on their own ground. is it any wonder they were defeated? I venture to assert without fear of contradiction that the men who lost the match were not the players but the directors."
