The curtain has now been drawn on the 2022/23 Premier League campaign and there is no denying that it has been a poor year for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Clearly our exploits last season, in particular, have just simply caught up with us this year, but Klopp and the players (to their credit) are not hiding from how disappointing the season has become as we now miss out on Champions League football next year but you can certainly
place a bet on Liverpool qualifying next season.
Speaking ahead of the final game of the season against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium, Klopp remained bullish about the future, even though he knew this year would not last long in the memory of fans.
"It's not a season we will talk about. We have failed to give our people more to enjoy. But nobody is tired, everybody cares and everybody wants to do their best. The unity between us and the supporters is so important. That trust and faith is a super basis for us. We have created this atmosphere and I love that. It will be a trampoline for us and that for me is the trophy we have won this year. This season has not been historically good. But since we had a training camp in Dubai after the World Cup, not everything has been perfect but the points we have collected have been pretty good. If we could have done that all season, we'd be in a different place. So, of course there are reasons for optimism. All of these things are the basis for a fantastic future."
Fans will note it is Klopp's lowest league finish since he took charge of the club back in the 2015/16 campaign, but Europa League football is still on the cards for next season, so it should not cause that many problems when it comes to the budget, but obviously eyes will be on how we do next season as no doubt some will be wondering if our German gaffer may have now run his proverbial course.
The vast majority will, however, doubt that and for good reason. Despite how poor this year has been given our previous standards, we still won seven of the final nine games, so despite the inconsistency that has plagued us throughout the season, the quality and team spirit is clearly still there.
A sentiment somewhat shared by Egyptian wizard
Mohamed Salah, who knew that we had to deal with the disappointment before then looking for the positives that we can carry forward into the next campaign.
"We let you and ourselves down. We had everything we needed to make it to next year's Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it's too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post."
Southampton may not have been the win that we wanted to end the season on a proper high, but it was a rollercoaster that proved the team spirit point. Build on that, and next season should be fine.
