19:45 BST Liverpool kick off.
3 mins: A flying start for Liverpool. A free-kick out on the right wing is lofted into the area by Gary McAllister. No Alaves defenders attack the cross - and unmarked Markus Babbel is able to head the ball home with comparative ease.
Liverpool 1-0 Alaves
8: Alaves, who seem intimidated in their first major final, are unable to hold onto the ball - and the impressive McAllister tries to take advantage by sending Emile Heskey through, but keeper Martin Herrera hacks the ball clear.
10: Martin Astudillo of Alaves becomes the first player to be booked by the referee, following a reckless swipe at Emile Heskey. Gary McAllister takes exception to the challenge and confronts Astudillo - an action that earns him a yellow card as well.
11: A looping header from Heskey is comfortably saved by Herrera.
12: Alaves are awarded a free-kick just outside the Liverpool area, following a late challenge from Stephane Henchoz. Oscar Tellez curls a shot towards the right-hand corner of Sander Westerveld's net - but the Dutch keeper pushes the ball away at full stretch.
15: Liverpool leave Alaves stunned with another early goal. Michael Owen collects Dietmar Hamann's in the middle of the Spaniards' half, then plays a diagonal through-ball to Steven Gerrard. With the defence again chasing shadows, Gerrard thumps a low shot on the run into the net.
Liverpool 2-0 Alaves
20: More Liverpool pressure results in a McAllister cross. Heskey gets in a header - but he is unable to trouble the keeper.
22: Gary McAllister shoots well over from Steven Gerrard's pass.
22: With Alaves looking to force their way back into the game, they make an early substitution. Uruguyan frontman Ivan Alonso replaces Norwegian defender Dan Eggen.
26: The substitution makes an immediate impact, as the new man Ivan Alonso puts Alaves back into the game. Cosmin Contra sends over a deep cross from the right flank and Alonso rises above Babbel at the far post to head home.
Liverpool 2-1 Alaves
28: Alaves, lifted by the goal, push on. Another cross from Contra causes problems in the Liverpool area and Stephane Henchoz is happy to hack the ball behind for a corner.
31: Contra, who is now a real threat on the right, fires over a cross, which evades Henchoz's jump and falls to Javi Moreno. But the Alaves frontman has a poor first touch and Babbel is able to tackle him just as he prepares to shoot.
35: A huge let-off for Liverpool, as Alaves are now far more impressive. Alonso's header falls to Moreno, who skips past Henchoz and has only Westerveld to beat. But the keeper stands his ground and the ball hits his chest. From the rebound Ivan Tomic tries his luck - but the ball again hits Westerveld.
40: Penalty to Liverpool. Michael Owen's run takes him past the Alaves defence. On-rushing keeper Martin Herrera is left chasing back into the area and he brings Owen down with a despairing lunge. With a defender on the line, the keeper is only booked, rather than being sent off for a professional foul.
Gary McAllister takes the penalty - and his low shot just evades Herrera's impressive dive.
Liverpool 3-1 Alaves
44: Alaves push on in search of a second goal before half-time - but Oscar Tellez cannot keep his shot down.
20:30 BST The half-time whistle blows, bringing an end to a dramatic first 45 minutes.
20:46 Alaves kick off at the start of the second half.
46: If Liverpool thought the penalty had swung the game their way, they were wrong. Constantin Contra causes Jamie Carragher all sorts of problems with a series of twists and turns on the left-hand corner of the Liverpool area.
Eventually Contra produces a superb cross and Javi Moreno guides a glancing header past Westerveld.
Liverpool 3-2 Alaves
50: The match now takes on epic proportions as suddenly Alaves are level. The Spanish side are awarded a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Javi Moreno blasts a shot straight at the Liverpool wall. The ball somehow finds its way through and past a static Westerveld into the net.
Liverpool 3-3 Alaves
55: Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier, clearly rattled by Alaves' comeback, replaces Stephane Henchoz with Vladimir Smicer. Steven Gerrard drops back to right-back.
58: A promising Liverpool attack is brought to an abrupt halt by Antonio Karmona, who chops down Michael Owen - and is booked as a result. Gary McAllister hits the resultant free-kick straight at the wall.
64: Another Liverpool substitution. Robbie Fowler comes on in place of Emile Heskey. And Alaves surprisingly bring on Pablo Gomez for double goalscorer Javi Moreno.
69: A loose ball falls to Owen on the edge of the Alaves area - but his powerful strike is stopped by a last-gasp tackle. Gerrard's right-wing cross then drifts alarmingly towards Herrera's net - but he leaps to prevent a bizarre goal.
72: Liverpool take the lead again with a cracking goal from substitute Robbie Fowler. Gary McAllister strokes a precise through-ball to Fowler, who cuts in from the left, shimmies past a defender, then hits a stunning shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Liverpool 4-3 Alaves
78: Michael Owen, whose late goals won Liverpool the FA Cup last weekend, is replaced by Patrik Berger.
80: Alaves are camped on the edge of the Liverpool area, but there is no way through a reinforced defence - and Ivan Alonso's shot cannot get through a sea of bodies.
82: Alaves appeal for a penalty as Brazilian substitute Magno goes sprawling under Hamann's challenge - but the referee ignores the claims and books him for diving instead.
87: Impressive build-up play from Alaves gives Magno a chance on the right-hand corner of the area - but his diagonal shot is saved by Sander Westerveld.
88: A final twist in normal time, as Alaves - almost inevitably in an amazing game - score another equaliser with just two minutes left. Goalkeeper Westerveld concedes a corner, the cross comes over from the Liverpool left and Jordi Cruyff rises above Steven Gerrard to score with a header.
Liverpool 4-4 Alaves
92: More Alaves pressure brings further penalty appeals, as Constantin Contra falls to ground under pressure from Steven Gerrard.
21:35 BST The final whistle blows and the game goes to the golden goal phase - 30 minutes of sudden death football.
21:39 Liverpool kick off the first 15-minute phase of extra time.
93: A lucky break for Liverpool. Ivan Alonso fires the ball into the back of Westerveld's net - but the flag is up for offside.
94: Oscar Tellez is booked for a foul on Robbie Fowler deep into Alaves territory.
97: Dietmar Hamann tries a speculative free-kick from almost 40 yards out - but the Liverpool midfielder's shot is off target.
98: Alaves are reduced to 10 men. Magno, who has already been booked, is shown a second yellow card for a clumsy two-footed challenge on Markus Babbel.
99: Alaves charge forward in numbers - but Liverpool breathe a sigh of relief as Ivan Alonso drags his shot well wide.
101: Patrik Berger storms into the Alaves area and hits a shot on the run. Herrera parries it and the ball is scrambled behind.
104: This time it is Liverpool's turn to score an offside "goal", Robbie Fowler's effort ruled out on the stroke of half-time in the extra period.
21:55 The first golden goal period ends.
21:56 Alaves kick off, with a maximum of 15 minutes of play left.
105: Markus Babbel is booked for chopping down Delfi Geli 30 yards from goal. But Hermes Desio's curling free-kick drifts wide.
108: An excellent right-wing cross from Steven Gerrard looks like it might create the winner - but Robbie Fowler fails to make contact with his header and the danger is cleared.
110: Patrik Berger tries his luck from 30 yards out, but his dipping shot goes over the bar.
112: Berger's shot is deflected for a corner - but McAllister's cross is comfortably held by Herrera.
115: Alaves are down to nine men after another sending off. Vladimir Smicer breaks down the Liverpool left, but Antonio Karmona cynically pulls him back and is red carded as a result.
117: Gary McAllister takes the free-kick and lofts the cross into the area, where Alaves defender Delfi Geli heads the ball into his own net.
The own goal is a golden goal - and amid scenes of mayhem in Dortmund, Liverpool are Uefa Cup-winners.
