Sunday's clash with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City side turned into a bit of a mixed bag for Liverpool and manager
Jurgen Klopp, but undoubtedly footballing neutrals would have loved it.
Whilst we took a pretty decent point on the day, and quite easily could have had more had we rightly had the second penalty awarded for Jeremy Doku's chest high challenge on Alexis Mac Allister, our gaffer was taking the positives from the second half showing that had City well rattled.
After that showing there were probably some fans who fancied their chances on websites like
https://gamblenator.com/au/no-deposit-bonus/300-dollar, but the experience probably would not match seeing the team lift the trophy again at the end of the year.
His praise for the efforts of the squad were spot on and repeated by plenty of pundits who struggled to recall the last time City were put under the kind of pressure that truly had them worried, and the vast majority agreed it was the best we had ever played against them.
In any event, we continue to look forward to the end of the season knowing full well if we can repeat those performance levels in other games, Klopp's confidence in seeing us again lift the title in what will be his last year at Anfield, could prove to be incredibly justified.
One way or another though it will be a big summer for the club irrespective of what happens with the title race as obviously we have our future managerial question to now answer, and with our search for a new gaffer continuing to strongly indicate that 42 year old Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso remains the firm favourite, we will have to see how our chase for the Spaniard goes given the season he is having out in the German Bundesliga.
More recent reports have suggested that our back up options are now down to three names on the extended short list. 44 year old Italian Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Hove Albion, 36 year old German international coach Julien Nagelsmann and Portuguese gaffer, Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP.
For many Liverpool fans, seeing the return of former midfielder Alonso would in many cases be the ideal outcome here, especially given the potential he has shown since stepping into the management game.
There will be further changes at the club as well, former sporting director Michael Edwards will take up a new position as CEO of Football within FSG..
Edwards initially joined us back in 2011 under our Fenway Sports Group (FSG) owners, becoming sporting director in 2016 and he only departed in the summer of 2022.
The sporting director position is obviously vacant following
Jorg Schmadtke's exit back in January, and one of Edwards' first jobs will be to appoint a replacement, and many in the media believe that it will be current Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes, as he is already slated to leave the role at Dean Court at the end of the current campaign.
With Edwards playing such a pivotal part in bringing in the likes of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, centre half Virgil van Dijk and Egyptian wizard Mohamed Salah, his return will calm fans who are a bit more nervous on what the future will hold post Klopp as he naturally returns with an element of continuity at the fore.
Hopefully confirmation of his return comes through sooner rather than later, as it would be the start of having fewer questions to answer as we approach the summer, and our full focus can then stay firmly on seeing Klopp depart on a real high with additional silverware to his name from his already very successful spell on Merseyside.
