Liverpool is still one of the UK’s most favoured teams and since 2020 saw them at the top favourite in the eyes of fans, and now in 2023 they’re number four – the reds don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. With 45 million fans constantly cheering at the sidelines, a lot of the players are used to feeling unstoppable both on and off the pitch. From Liverpool legends like our very own Steven Gerrard, to top scorers who made history, we’re shining the light on the Red’s biggest stars, and where they are today.
Time has gone by since LFC was founded back in 1892 by John Houlding, who owned Anfield stadium and was a businessperson in his own right; but the core values of the club are entrusted into every player that steps onto the pitch. Once named Everton FC (we were the OG’s), Liverpool FC has segmented itself as not just a competitor, but a spearhead in the world of footie and one that Liverpool legends will remember forever.
Steven Gerrard
Ah, Steven Gerrard, where do we start? You’re not a Red if you aren’t familiar with the brilliance that he brought to the pitch for our Liverpool team. Regarded as one of the best midfielders of his time, Gerrard has come a long way since his debut back in 1998. Now retired, of course, he has written (or ghostwritten more like), a plethora of books, and has written his journey down in those. Head over to our lowdown on the ‘
Liverpool Story’ for the full detail, but it’s fifteen chapters of gold. From stepping onto the grass for the first time, to hanging up his boots, he’s left no stone unturned. A personal mention was to Jamie Redknapp, where he was quoted to have said that Steven would ‘walk into Liverpool’s first team’ which is exactly where he got his morale boost from – and Redknapp certainly wasn’t wrong.
Gerrard made over 700 appearances for our team in his career and helped score big in some momentous times. From helping LFC win the trophy back in the 2001 FA Cup Final from his far-out goal scoring, to captaining the team to greatness, to the FA Cup Final in 2006 where a win was secured on penalties – if Liverpool were going to win, it would be with the help of Gerrard. But where is he now? Still as much of a big character as he was when he retired from Liverpool back in 2015, Gerrard has been making moves for himself. His departure from the club was a profoundly valuable time in sporting history, seeing that he had never accepted any kind of transfer in all his time with the Red’s, so he really is one of our greats.
You’ll find Gerrard back into management after his sacking from Aston Villa last year, with the legend joining up to a Saudi Club, Al-Ettifaq. Following many football stars moving to the Middle-East this summer, Gerrard has been named as the team's head coach, who will see them on a brilliant uprise. No stranger to stepping into the limelight for other countries, only last year M88 Mansions and many other betting platforms used Steven Gerrard as their ambassador for the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup and more. Making a stand for variations of entertainment sectors like casinos,
exciting and interactive jackpot slots and even popular gambling apps – Gerrard has made his stamp in the world of sports betting.
Now he’s earning £15.2 million a year in Saudi Arabia, we’re sure there are more brand deals that will funnel in the pipelines in future. A Liverpool legend, world renowned sportsman, manager, and brand ambassador – Gerrard is a man you want as the face for your brand, that’s for sure.
Ian Rush
Not just a Liverpool legend, but a star for our country, too.
Ian Rush is someone that made history for the Red’s and saw his home country of Wales through to 73 internationals for Wales, where he scored 28 goals – making a goalscoring record. Known by the Red’s as our top goal scorer to exist, Ian happened to have scored 201 goals in 331 appearances in his first spell with us, and later adding in 139 goals in 329 games, after returning from Juventus.
Beating the likes of Roger Hunt and Gordon Hogson, Rush is our top scorer to grace our pitches, and played for us from 1980 until 1987, and later returning for 1988 until 1996. With a total of 346 goals, where could his dynasty have taken him?
Retiring as a player in the year 2000, Rush went on to manage Chester City from 2004 until 05. He was also made a member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1996 New Year Honors for services to association in football and is remarkably still a notable pundit for ESPN and Sky Sports.
Ian Callaghan
If there was ever a Liverpool Legend worthy as our number one, then it would be no other than the honourable Ian Callaghan. Giving us an incredible 18 years on the pitch, Callaghan was also part of England’s remarkable 1966 World Cup win. Taking the number one position for the most appearances in LFC history, with
857 played games, Callaghan went onto be the prominent figure giving us the two European Cup wins and five First Division titles. With his very own mural at Anfield, with other legend Phil Neal, Ian is by far one of the ones who’s cemented in our history.
To this day he still holds the most league appearances, and the second most European appearances behind Jamie Carragher – but after his retirement he kept a simple life. Starting up an insurance sales business and being the president of the Official Liverpool FC Fanclub, Ian isn’t in the spotlight as much as he used to. No matter where he is, he’s one of the greatest players for the Red’s, and we wouldn’t have the history or knowledge that we know today without him.
