Who Could Replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool Manager?

Jurgen Klopp has already spoken about how difficult the 2022/23 season has been and how it’s been a really long season with many challenges. While he’s shown no signs of wanting to quit any time soon, people have already started speculating about who might replace him, so who are the leading names right now?

Steven Gerrard

Legendary former players are always among the favourites to take over as manager, particularly in a club with such a strong history of continuity as Liverpool. Gerrard's time in Glasgow with Rangers yielded a solitary trophy but is generally regarded as being positive given the fact that the team was so far behind city rivals Celtic when he arrived in 2018.

A move to Aston Villa in 2021 brought him back to England, but he lasted less than a year amid poor results. It seems that this mixed record and his careful, possession-based approach, as explained here in a FootballCoin analysis piece, might not be the perfect fit after Klopp’s high-intensity but there’s no doubt that many fans would be happy to see him back at Anfield. In terms of his chances, the current sports betting market has Gerrard at 10/1 to take over from the German, but how accurate is this figure?

We can understand the way this betting market works behind the scenes by looking at the details listed on the Sportingtech website. They use the latest technology to give bookmakers and betting sites up-to-date odds 24/7 on a huge range of sports covered on their platform. Therefore, their customizable feeds for betting on new manager markets, in-game markets and other wagers are always an accurate reflection of the latest pieces of news but subtly adapted to the needs of their specific users.

Pep Lijnders

One of the most interesting names to be linked with the role if Klopp leaves, Pep Lijnders is in his second spell at Liverpool and is currently the assistant manager, while he also published his first book last year. Titled Intensity: Our Identity, it gave a compelling inside look at the way that the team was re-energised for the exhilarating 2021-22 season.

Some critics suggested that this book was responsible for giving away some of the team’s secrets, but it’s clear from the content that Lijnders is a deep thinker about the game. It’s possible that Klopp would pick his right-hand man if he was asked to choose a successor, but his lack of experience in a management role could go against him.

Julian Nagelsmann

Given the importance of timing in football, the fact that Bayern Munich chose to dismiss Julian Nagelsmann in March while Liverpool was struggling led many people to immediately link him with the Liverpool job. His impressive record and tactical knowledge make him one of the most sought-after coaches on the planet right now, so Liverpool would need to move quickly to appoint him.

Nagelsmann has already been linked with other clubs and it’s been reported by the Guardian that he’s been in talks with Chelsea over their vacant manager role. If he doesn’t end up at Stamford Bridge, he may end up at Anfield eventually, but at the time of writing, it seems unlikely that his next job is at Liverpool.

For the moment, the majority of Liverpool fans still hope that Jurgen Klopp can turn things around. If he does then the search for a new manager will be a more distant prospect and the leading names on the list are sure to change.
