LIVERPOOL EDGED OUT IN THRILLER
Ipswich 1 Liverpool 0
It was a top-of-the-table clash which fully lived up to expectations in excitement and lung-bursting endeavour.
For Ipswich – without a League win for six games – the 84th minute goal could well give them a timely lift after a lean October. It certainly put them into second place after Liverpool.
The goal was made by David Johnson and hustled into the net as he fell by Brian Talbot. And although Liverpool, whose superb defence had soaked up any amount of pressure, forced two corners in the closing minutes, they could not deny Ipswich their just reward.
Liverpool stayed cool under a series of lively attacks from the opening whistle as Ipswich went all out to gain an early advantage.
When they finally got past on the flank, Clive Woods’ low cross set up a chance for Brian Talbot, but he could not get the power behind the shot and Ray Clemence saved on the line.
In the second half Liverpool changed the pattern and in the 56th minute Ray Kennedy ended a neat dribble with a flashy shot just inches wide.
Then he sent Kevin Keegan racing away but Laurie Sivell got a touch to turn his shot past the post.
