Can Liverpool Make League Cup History?

Could history be made on February 27? Betting analysts believe so. A win for the Reds over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup will be a record ninth success, though not all their wins have come at Wembley.

The year ends in a 2 so that’s a good omen for Liverpool. They previously won the League Cup (best to call it that as no one can remember all the many sponsors) in 1982 and 2012. Now it’s 2022 and another triumph looks on the cards.

Liverpool have won the League Cup on eight occasions. They did have the outright lead until Manchester City kept on winning the trophy. City won’t be doing that this time around having lost to West Ham. That’s left it open now for the Reds to win the cup for a ninth time.

The League Cup was first held in the 1960/61 season. However, it took 20 years for Liverpool to lift the trophy for the first time as per Britishgambler. Even then it wasn’t at Wembley that the trophy was lifted high by Ray Kennedy.

Liverpool took on West Ham at Wembley and it was goalless after 90 minutes. It looked as If an 118th minute Alan Kennedy goal would be the winner. However, Ray Stewart equalized two minutes later. No penalty shootouts in those days and off Liverpool went to Villa Park 18 days later. Two first-half goals from Dalglish and Hansen saw Liverpool finally get their hands on the League Cup.

That was the first of four straight seasons in which Liverpool won the League Cup. Who could forget the 1984 final against Everton? Again, the cup wasn’t raised high at Wembley. After a goalless draw, Liverpool won the cup at Maine Road, winning 1-0 thanks to a Graeme Souness goal. A loss at Tottenham later that year ended hopes of a fifth win in a row.

It wasn’t until 1995 that Liverpool again won the League Cup. Steve McManaman was the hero that year, scoring twice in a 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Six years later, Liverpool won a sixth League Cup but a third not clinched at Wembley. That was being rebuilt, so off Liverpool went to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff to beat Birmingham City. The game ended 1-1 after extra time and for the first time, Liverpool won the cup via a penalty shootout.

They returned to Cardiff in 2003, beating Manchester United thanks to goals from Gerrard and Owen.  Two years later they were back in Cardiff but let’s hope there’s no repeat of the 3-2 loss to Chelsea in that year’s final. All a bit disappointing after taking the lead in the first minute through John Arne Risse.  Steven Gerrard was the villain this time, scoring the own goal that earned Chelsea extra time.

Cup finals were being held at Wembley again by 2012. Liverpool won their eighth final but again needed penalties to do so. Their opponents this time were Cardiff City and the Reds had to come from behind to take the game into extra time. It was 2-2 after 120 minutes but Liverpool won the penalty shootout 3-2.

Now they’re back at Wembley aiming to win a ninth League Cup. It’s not been an easy route to the final, especially against Leicester City in the quarter final. Chelsea will be tough opponents but with their best players back from international duty, Liverpool can get that record win
