Divock Origi should be proud of cult hero standing

Divock Origi has been something of an enigma throughout his time at Liverpool Football Club, with the Belgian often posing more questions than he delivers answers.

Is he a striker? Is he a wide attacker? Is he worth persevering with? Those are just some of the posers that a man snapped up from Lille in 2014 has presented, and in truth many of them still exist in the present.

To focus purely on end product would see Origi placed in a category of ‘must do better’, with there not having enough goals, assists or starts on his sporting CV to suggest that he adds any more than depth to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

His, though, is not a story of consistency - one to rival superstar team-mate Mohamed Salah - it is one of moments and producing the unexpected. He may not be the leading man on Merseyside, but he is not prepared to fade into the background as a non-speaking extra either.

Origi already has domestic and European titles to his name, with the intention being to enhance that medal collection in 2022. Liverpool are back in the hunt for another Premier League crown and are third favourites within Champions League betting at Betfair to conquer the continent for a seventh time in their rich history.
Back in 2019, a Belgium international put the finishing touches to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham that returned the Reds to the loftiest of perches. With that one effort, a place in Anfield folklore was secured.

A prominent role had already been played in getting Klopp’s men to that point, with two goals registered in an iconic semi-final home win over Barcelona that made a mockery of Champions League predictions and will be held up to future generations as an example of why you should never give up. Liverpool and Origi proved nothing is impossible that night.

Impact

Maintaining such standards was always going to be difficult, but there was enough credit in the bank to ensure that public opinion would not turn either.

Origi has rarely been a go-to man for Liverpool, before or after his exploits against Barca and Spurs, but he has a useful habit of ripping up the script. The last minute of a Merseyside derby to claim local bragging rights, or a trip to Wolves where three points are required to keep a bid for top-flight glory on track, an unsung hero is forever waiting in the wings.

It is that standing which has sparked talk of an imminent move being made, with more regular game time to be found elsewhere.

Would Origi have it any better though? Would he be afforded the same levels of patience and acclaim outside of L4? You have to think that is unlikely but, as already mentioned, questions are never too far away from a mercurial talent.

You would imagine that Origi knows full well that there is no greener grass to be found on the other side, with there a lot to be said for his current status. Given the sheer volume of players who have passed in and out of the Shankly Gates down years while barely registering on a collective radar, to be recognised as a cult hero is something to be proud of.
