Two years since the Reds claimed their sixth European Cup in Madrid, can Jürgen Klopp’s side once again mount a potential challenge for the Champions League crown this season and defy the odds once more to win a climactic seventh European championship?
After a summer window that wielded a mixed bag of transfer business, Liverpool may still remain as likely candidates to be named as UEFA Champions League winners.
The departure of Georginio Wijnaldum certainly has forced a massive dent in Klopp’s striking midfield depth and partnership.
But the Reds were able to add a much-needed back-up in defence with
French Centre-half Ibrahima Konaté who joined in a projected £36million move from German side RB Leipzig.
Konaté may prove to be a vital addition to a Liverpool defence who were left completely crippled by injury’s in last season’s 2020/21 campaign.
Despite a patchy run of form at the turn of the year, Liverpool still carved out a respectable third placed finish in the league ensuring that they would be once again competing at Europe’s most astute footballing competition.
With a number of major names returning to the Liverpool side this season, including defender Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool have started the new season brightly with early season wins against the likes of Norwich, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Leeds United.
Although, despite such promising results in the winning column, the Reds have already dropped vital points on three occasions this season against Manchester City, Chelsea and Premier League new boys Brentford.
In the opening Champions League matchday, Liverpool put on a strong showing in a 3-2 victory over Italian giants AC Milan which would later be followed up with a sublime 5-1 thumping against Portuguese side FC Porto and most recently a pulsating 3-2 away win at Atletico Madrid that knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League in their 2020 last sixteen clash.
Should Liverpool win the two games against Madrid, they will gain qualification through to the knockout stages of the competition which may help raise the Reds’ profile as one of the favourites to win this season’s competition.
Is the Champions League a possibility for Liverpool this season?
Liverpool may well be one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season, but that does not mean it will be an easy road to a third potential finals appearance in the past five years.
Should Liverpool falter at an earlier stage of the competition it maybe wise to
use a cash-out site for any potential Champions League bets fans are planning on placing for this season.
With that being said, there is certainly no reason why the Reds cannot mount another challenge at the Champions League this season, given that they will have a number of names fit for this campaign and can still produce a line-up that is capable of beating any of Europe’s most coveted sides.
The Reds have an unprecedented depth of players in their side with the usual names in the starting line-up all playing at full fruition at this current juncture.
While the likes of Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich may be touted as the perennial favourites to win the Champions League this season, fans should not count the Reds out as they could certainly raise a number of eyebrows this season given the talent they still acquire.
With the further development and continuous excellent performances from star names such as Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk among a vast number of other players, Liverpool still have the means to be a strong candidate to lift the illustrious title this season.
Do Liverpool need more reinforcements in January?
The January transfer window is also dawning on the horizon and the Reds could be in the market for a number of fresh names to help their squad depth to be more active and raring to go for both the Premier League title and Champions League, along with other domestic cup trophies.
Liverpool are not often heavy spenders in the transfer windows compared to the other ‘top six’ Premier League clubs but will often still be scouring the market for any options should they need any extra additions.
Liverpool will likely only often spend big when they have seen a major name depart the club with a prime example being Phillippe Coutinho’s £120million move to Barcelona in January 2018 that saw Liverpool spend majorly in the same window on Virgil Van Dijk and in the following summer window on names who have all resulted in positive spells at Anfield.
The rumour mill is in full swing as ever with the Reds being
linked with plenty of big names in world football including Italian winger Federico Chiesa, German striker Karim Adeyemi and even England international Jude Bellingham over in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.
Anfield could also bear witness to a small number of departures in January with the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain being rumoured to be heading to the exit door and fan favourite Divock Origi also attracting interest from a number of suitors including FC Barcelona.
While Liverpool’s potential transfer activity remains under debate for the time being, any elite names who walk through the famous gates of Anfield could help further turn the tide back in Liverpool’s favour as likely favourites to lift this season’s Champions League trophy.
There is still a long way to go in the season, but with the progress made thus far, fans will be hoping that there is more in store in the Reds quest to lift their seventh European Cup.
