Could Seventh Champions League Success Arrive This Season?
Over the last four years, Liverpool have been one of the most consistent teams in the Champions League as they've only once failed to make the quarter-final in that period. One of the most significant highlights was when they won the Champions League in 2019, beating Tottenham in the final. This season, Liverpool are on the hunt for their seventh success in the competition and they are already firmly established among the big teams with a strong chance of lifting the trophy.
In the Champions League winner odds, Liverpool are fifth-favourites in the ranks and currently at 8/1 odds to prevail. They have the likes of PSG, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and defending champions Chelsea ahead of them in the outright market with the bookmakers. Liverpool are sure to be one of the popular selections in the Champions League predictions, particularly when they play at home. Their record at Anfield is excellent, and with a full crowd behind them, it will continue to be a tough place to get a result for the opposition.
Premier League Clubs Ahead Of European Rivals
Three of the last four Champions League finals have featured at least one Premier League club. Two of the last three have been all-English finals. This indicates that England's a long way clear of the other major countries such as Spain and Italy when it comes to strength in depth.
Manchester City have been desperately trying to win the Champions League ever since they appointed Pep Guardiola in 2016. They came close back in May but were denied by Chelsea. With Romelu Lukaku now in the Blues' attacking ranks, the 2020/2021 winners are arguably even stronger than they were last season as they look to defend their crown.
In addition, the return of Cristiano Ronaldo has boosted Manchester United’s chances this season. Morale is significantly heightened by the fact that Ronaldo has won the competition five times and is no stranger to performing under the pressure of the tournament. Ronaldo last prevailed in 2008 with United when they were successful in the final, held in Moscow, on penalties.
Promisingly, Liverpool have had some big wins over the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG in recent years so they have proved they can beat all the big teams in Europe.
Fully Fit Defence Helps Klopp
Injuries, particularly at the back, really crippled Liverpool last season. In their knockout fixture against Real Madrid, Klopp was forced to field Ozan Kabak and Nathaniel Phillips as his centre-back partnership. However, both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are fit again now and that's going to make a big difference to the squad.
Liverpool added defender Ibrahima Konate to the club during the summer transfer window, which gives them more cover in a vital position. The Frenchman has a lot of experience in the Champions League and should feature heavily in the competition this season.
In midfield and the forward positions, Klopp has a lot of options in his squad and he's likely to rotate those players, especially before and after big Champions League nights. When they won the trophy two years ago, some of the fringe players in the squad like Divock Origi played a big role in the success.
A seventh Champions League success this season would move Liverpool up to joint-second in the list of most titles in the competition alongside AC Milan.
