It always pleases a soccer crowd when a last minute deputy gets the winning goal. So it was at Roker Park when 19 year old Harry Kirtley who was brought in at the last minute because of an ankle injury to Broadis shot a great goal to give Sunderland a 3-2 victory over the league leaders.
The goal came 8 minutes from time and for the youngest player on the field, the climax of a splendid game before a crowd of 46,515 the largest in the first division who cheered the ex Fatfield junior. No one would have given much chance for Sunderland after a quarter hours play. Liverpool were two goals up through Brierley 8mins and Done 15 and were dictating the exchanges.
The Sunderland players had other ideas however. Four minutes after Done’s goal Tommy Wright cut into the middle and pushed home a centre from Reynolds to reduce the arrears and 3 minutes later Shackleton put them on level terms.
True the winner was a long time coming but it always looked as if it would arrive especially in the second half when Liverpool were on the defensive for most of the time. The Roker attack were inspired by the brilliant play of Shackleton who set up raid after raid.
Watson back again following injury and Shackleton were Sunderland’s two big men although Hudgell deserves a mention for the successful way in which he played international winger Liddell and Arthur Wright for the manner in which he set Shackleton going and formed with Reynolds the best flank on view. Lambert and Taylor were outstanding in the Liverpool defence.
