Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool side are going from strength to strength as the top flight of the table starts to take shape. The German manager's side broke new ground last weekend after their emphatic 3-0 defeat of Leicester City, the Foxes led by former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.
It signals a 64 game unbeaten league run on home turf that proves history is still in the making as the class of 2020 superseded the record for unbeaten games set over almost 40 years ago during Bob Paisley's reign.
The original record was set over the course 1978-81, in what proved an emotional start to commemorate the passing of Liverpool legend and Paisley-era goalkeeper Ray Clemence.
Klopp's new record signals a spate of undefeated league games that stretches back to May 2017, signalling a total of 53 games won, 11 games drawn and most importantly, zero defeats.
Since the start of this string of unbroken league matches at Anfield, Liverpool have gone on to win the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and most recently the Premier League.
It has led a number of top betting sites in the UK to shorten their odds on Liverpool to successfully defend their title this season. In a switch of favour, many bookmakers actually backed rivals Manchester City to go all the way this campaign. But in a quick reversal many operators are now favouriing Liverpool as they sit joint top of the domestic league table.
With a relatively unpredictable season underway so far, and though odds on Liverpool to take the title have lessened in a matter of weeks since the September start, they still represent better value than at any other point last season.
Despite positive moves in a push towards the top of the table, Liverpool have shown chinks in their armour, registering a single though anomalous battering 7-2 away to Aston Villa. Injury problems to the backline have raised concerns, although this most recent of emphatic victories, complete with clean sheet, has eased more immediate doubts.
Still, the manager has played down the importance of this recently broken record, emphasising the importance of focusing attention on multiple prizes in play. Klopp cited his attention will not waver from midweek Champions League action, nor from Premier League duties with fixtures coming thick and fast.
Liverpool's immediate rivals in Jose Mourinho's Spurs and Pep Guardiola's Manchester City are currently second and third favourites to challenge Liverpool's crown. 2018/2019 champions Manchester City are currently priced at around 3.75, while Tottenham Hotspur who are still searching for their first Premier League title, have jumped in the odds from an incredible 51.0 to just 6.50 - a recent run of form that sees them top of the table on goal difference.
It seems for the Liverpool boss, less meaningful records to be broken will not waver focus from the ultimate prizes and the perennial search for silverware.
Liverpool have a busy fixture list ahead of them in December, a total of six fixtures in front of them, of course combined with European duties. One positive is that the Reds only have to face one team in the top half the table, providing a perfect opportunity to put points on the board.
