Liverpool have started the new Premier League season with serious intent following back to back to wins against Leeds United and Chelsea in their first league fixtures over the last two weeks.
A shaky start at home to Leeds gave way to resounding victory in London on the road to Chelsea. This season represents the first in the modern era where Liverpool are looking to complete a double of Premier League titles, and it's certainly looking up.
Bookmakers across the board have updated their odds on a Liverpool title challenge, and despite a strong start to the season, the Reds are still only second favourites to lift this year's Premier League trophy. The highest odds
are currently on a number of new betting sites which typically offer a more competitive price in order to compete with the more established betting sites.
It would certainly represent a worthwhile investment should it come off at such high odds. In fact historically Liverpool have a positive record in terms of rolling, back to back success.
The First Double
You would have to cast your eyes back a few generations to see when Liverpool first won back to back domestic titles. After the resumption of play following the First World War, Liverpool's first solid stint at success was when they lifted consecutive titles at the beginning of the 1920s.
Success had come fleetingly to Liverpool over the first two decades of the twentieth century, the club clutching to it's first two league titles in 1901 and 1906 respectively.
Liverpool would bounce back, winning their first double of domestic league titles over the 1921-22 and 1922-23 seasons. English manager David Ashworth would go on to guide the Reds to their first of two titles in his first year season in charge, beating Tottenham Hotspur to the title by six points.
The following season's success came under the guidance of Scotsman and club legend Matt McQueen following the resignation of Ashworth. McQueen was already well accomplished at Liverpool, part of the title winning side who lifted the Second Division trophy in 1894 and 1896. Under McQueen Liverpool would go onto become the first English side in twenty years to complete a double of English league titles.
However, the Liverpool faithful would have to wait some time for success to come back to Anfield.
Bob Paisley and a flurry of back to backs
The 1960s that had seen Liverpool challenge once again for football's highest honours. Bill Shankly had tussled with his opposite number Matt Busby of Manchester United to win titles in both in 1964 and 1966.
It wasn't to be until Bob Paisley took over the reigns that the Reds would see, not just one but a number of back to back title successes. Following his first League One title in which Liverpool pipped both Arsenal and Leeds United to top spot, Paisley guided the Reds to their first double of the 1970s over the course of the 1975-76 and 1976-77 seasons, but it wouldn't stop there.
Paisley would go on to guide Liverpool to another double and even a treble with the help of Joe Fagan over the course of the later 1970s and 1980s. This would without a doubt be the period that etched Liverpool's name into the greats of English football, but also in transforming them into a major European player.
Success in the Modern Era
The stakes then are high, and with Jürgen Klopp already ensuring himself as a standout name in the history annals of Liverpool Football Club, he could go one step further this season and be the first since Bob Paisley to lift two consecutive league titles.
With such an illustrious history and record of doubles already noted in the record books, time will only tell if Klopp can be the one to succeed and continue on the tradition of back to back success with Liverpool.
