Saved twice from Ruiz in quick succession first half, and produced an outrageous stop to deny Mertens after the interval. No chance with either goal, really.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 6
Caught out of position on a few occasions but did well to come across and cover one Napoli attack first half. Struggled a little after the break but could have done with a bit more help.
Joel Matip 7
A spate of sloppy passes early on put Liverpool under unnecessary pressure but atoned with later solid defending.
Virgil van Dijk 7
Impressive in helping clear a spate of Napoli corners with his aerial prowess and positioning. Contributed to a calamitous second, though.
Andy Robertson 6
Declared fit, enjoyed several trademark runs forward but was kept busy defensively. Lazy leg allowed Callejon excuse to fall over for the Napoli penalty and partly at fault for second.
Outstanding. Won three crunching tackles, one of which led to him releasing Salah. Barely misplaced a pass and so often in the right place.
Jordan Henderson 7
Sent Salah clear with one pass and while not everything came off, pressed hard – creating a chance for Mane – and always looked to drive forward.
James Milner 6
Busy on the left side of midfield, aiding Robertson in dealing with Mertens and Callejon while linking defence and attack. Tired a bit after the break. Booked and soon subbed.
Mohamed Salah 6
Demonstrated his pace in the opening moments and had the beating of the Napoli back line. Shaded his anticipated battle with Koulibaly and drew a fine save from Meret.
Roberto Firmino 7
As ever, dropped deep and saw a lot of the ball. Guided a header narrowly wide from Milner cross. However, like so many of his team-mates, it was an evening of nearly things.
Sadio Mane 6
A threat whenever running at the Napoli right-back Di Lorenzo, forced Meret into a save near post. Bad pass stopped Salah scoring a certain opener, though.
Gini Wijnaldum (for Milner 66) 6
Provided an injection of energy in the engine room.
Xherdan Shaqiri (for Henderson 87)
No time to change matters.
