Window watch: Five players who Liverpool could target in January

Forget the countdown to Christmas, it’s the re-opening of the transfer window that football fans are starting to get excited about.
And a world-class player coming to your club is truly the best present you can really wish for.
Bookies William Hill believe Liverpool have what it takes to challenge for top honours in Europe and domestically.
But if they are to challenge for multiple titles, Jurgen Klopp’s squad may have to be strengthened this January.
Here are five players who could be on their way to Anfield…
1 Bruno Fernandes
The Sporting attacking midfielder has been linked with a number of high-profile clubs this summer, Liverpool, their Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, plus Real Madrid, among them.
However, with no deals done the highly-rated Portugal international remained in Lisbon.
But with five goals and four assists from his opening seven Liga NOS and UEFA Europa League appearances, he remains very much on the radar across Europe.
However, a leaked recording of Fernandes blasting Sporting teammates has caused a storm recently, and that’s not the sort of behaviour Jurgen Klopp takes lightly so might count against him.
2 Jadon Sancho
England ace Sancho has been a revelation since his move to Borussia Dortmund.
Liverpool are among a number of clubs to have shown interest in the teenager whose pacy, attacking style of play and eye for a clever assist would see him fit seamlessly into the impressive attacking line-up at Anfield.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has recently confessed he doesn’t expect Sancho to remain with BVB for the next five years, which may see a renewed interest. January might be too soon – but his suitors won’t want to miss out.
3 Kalidou Koulibaly
With Croatian international Dejan Lovren out of favour at Anfield, he could well be on his way out of Liverpool this January.
The ever-impressive Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip have again been receiving rave reviews this season, but the Reds will need another top defender in case of suspension or injury.
Napoli defender Koulibaly – a Senegal teammate of Sadio Mane – has long been linked with a move to England, although the price tag may prove a stumbling block.
4 Kai Havertz
The 20-year-old Bayer Leverkusen and German national team midfielder is another player who is on the club’s radar – and brimming with potential.
The imposing 6ft 2ins figure became the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances, and if anyone has their finger on the pulse when it comes to talent in Germany then it’s Klopp.
Some felt Liverpool would look to sign Havertz this summer, and an end-of-season move may be more likely for the young talent.
But if other clubs begin to make offers in January then you never know.
5 Donyell Malen
Dutch wonderkid Donyell Malen has certainly begun the season in eye-catching form.
The 20-year-old has scored 12 times in his opening 16 appearances for PSV this season, on target in the Eredivisie and in Europe.
Malen spent his youth career at Ajax and Arsenal before moving to Eindhoven.
Everton are also showing an interest in the forward, which may make his capture all the sweeter for Reds fans.
