Liverpool player ratings - Wijnaldum, Henderson and Matip score highest in 2-0 win against Cardiff City
Ian Doyle dishes out his player ratings after Liverpool's 2-0 win against Cardiff City in the Premier League
09:50, 22 APR 2019
Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League table after defeating Cardiff City 2-0 yesterday.
The Reds turned it on in the second half with goals from Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner sealing all three points.
Wijnaldum drove in powerfully from a corner, with Jurgen Klopp later giving his players plenty of credit for their half-time discussion which led to the set-piece routine.
And then Milner converted from the spot after Mohamed Salah was fouled by Cardiff captain Sean Morrison.
The pressure is back on Manchester City, who travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday night to take on rivals Manchester United.
Here are Ian Doyle's player ratings from the win in Wales...
Alisson Becker 7
Batted away a few Cardiff corners and made a fine save from Niasse first half. Lucky to escape after completely misjudging one second-half corner from Ralls.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 6
Had real trouble coping with the pace of Mendez-Laing down the Cardiff left before the break. Also some issues with Niasse. Better second half and his corner assisted the opener.
Joel Matip 8
Almost caught out early on but otherwise continued his impressive form with some good interceptions and even had time for a few trademark forward forays.
Virgil van Dijk 7
Steady from the Dutchman, who oozed calmness. Made one strong tackle on Niasse. Dominated the Cardiff forward line after the break.
Andy Robertson 6
Vital block prevented Hoilett scoring at the far post before break but wasn't been able to swing in many trademark crosses. Steady defensively.
Gini Wijnaldum 8
Covered a lot of ground in the defensive midfield role, where his neat footwork and physicality helped. Blasted Liverpool into the lead with a brilliant finish.
Jordan Henderson 8
Again more advanced, in the first half created opportunities and half-chances with his continued probing. Great energy helped Liverpool improve collectively after the break.
Naby Keita 7
Started strongly with his willingness to drive at the Cardiff defence but quieter before the interval. Came again second half before being subbed.
Mohamed Salah 7
Scared Cardiff with his pace, drew one good save from Etheridge first half and a succession of panicked blocks and clearances. Some poor decisions after break before his persistence forced Morrison into conceding the clinching penalty.
Roberto Firmino 7
Led the press first half but guilty of a poor miss. Didn't let it affect him, though, and helped out in midfield so much. Got through a ridiculous amount of hard work.
Sadio Mane 7
Played in fits and starts in the first half, setting up Firmino's chance and putting a more difficult effort over. Better after the break, where his strength, pace and imagination was hugely impressive.
Fabinho (for Keita 71)
A clash of heads with Zohore brought an almost instant end to his afternoon.
James Milner (for Fabinho 75) 7
Instantly got stuck in and nervelessly tucked away the penalty. Booked.
Joe Gomez (for Alexander-Arnold 86)
More welcome minutes for the returning defender.
