Brentford’s high class display
Three times in arrears, Brentford beat Liverpool in a game packed with thrills. The tackling was too quick to allow either side to display an abundance of craft in attack, but there was much good football.
Liverpool got ahead in four minutes, and as the final whistle sounded Crozier was saving from Shafto, Liverpool’s 18 year-old leader, who scored his first League goal. The scoring honours, went to Reid, the Brentford outside left, who obtained three goals.
The fourth Brentford goal was a tragedy for Liverpool, for Kemp got his hands to the ball, fumbled it, and McCulloch scored. Kemp was badly injured in the first half, and this appeared to trouble him afterwards.
Brentford’s skill in drawing the Liverpool defence to the right enabled Reid to get his goals, and the visitors, in addition to being cleverer in attack, were sounder in defence.
Liverpool in the first half played fine, fast, open football, and had they swung the ball about in the same way after the interval, they might have won, but they played into the hands of a great Brentford defence, in which, Wilson excelled.
Goals came quickly. Hanson scored in four minutes, Reid (seven), Fagan off a defender (17), Reid (32), Shafto (44), Reid (60), and McCulloch (83).
