Bob Paisley: Reluctant Genius

Forty years ago this month Bob Paisley launched the campaign that began the most intensive capture of silverware by any manager in the history of English football. And to celebrate that anniversary four of his legendary players will be live on stage at New Brighton Floral Pavilion in the show that tells the remarkable story of the man who had to be powerfully persuaded to take on the towering challenge of succeeding Bill Shankly as Liverpool manager …. and re-wrote the record books.

Ian Callaghan, Jimmy Case, Alan Kennedy and Phil Neal join broadcaster and author John Keith and singer and guitarist Gerry Murphy in Bob Paisley: Reluctant Genius.

“When you look at what Bob won you can hardly believe it,” says Callaghan, whose club record 857-match career uniquely spanned second tier appearances under Shankly in the early 1960s to a place in Liverpool’s first European Cup triumph under Paisley in Rome in 1977. “While Bill was the greatest motivator Bob was an amazing tactician and he had this uncanny knack of buying players who complemented each other. He’s the only English manager to win the European Cup three times and the only one of any nationality to win three with one club. Jimmy, Alan, Phil and myself have some wonderful memories and great stories to tell about him. We’re looking forward to giving the audience an insight into a man who took on the job of following Shanks that many said was impossible. Bob was a very humble man but he had nothing to be humble about. His record is stunning.”

The contributions of the four Anfield legends and John Keith’s narration will be supported by audio clips and rolling images of Paisley and Gerry Murphy will perform his own composition The Ballad of Bob Paisley, which will be available on CD at the show.
