Victory at the Notts Goose Fair

Liverpool provided the Goose Fair football attraction in Nottingham to-day, opposing Notts County at Meadow-lane.

The visitors lacked the assistance of their most dangerous forward, Forshaw, and substituted Baron, the former Leicester and Mid-Rhonda player, whilst the “Magpies” also made one alteration which strengthened their side, Ashurst having sufficiently recovered from his attack of lumbago to resume his place in the defence.

It was a perfect afternoon, but not more than 10,000 to 12,000 spectators assembled. Notts won the toss, but secured very little advantage thereby, for there was practically no wind.
Liverpool promptly advanced on the left, Ashurst holding Hopkins off, and when Taylor made two attempts to force a passage McKinlay baulked him.

A free kick against Kemp for pushing led to a lively attack by the Liverpool forwards, and when Rawlings swept the ball in front Baron miskicked in an effort to turn it through.
The County quickly retaliated, Davis hurriedly shooting wide, with no time to control the ball.

For some minutes the County maintained the offensive, but Staniforth was too strong with his forward pass when he tried to put Widdowson through, and though Barry immediately returned and put in a perfect centre McNab intercepted, and first Lucas and then McKinlay cleared in opportune fashion.

The visitors made progress on the right, where Rawlings successfully resisted a challenge by Cope, and screwing the ball in front Hopkins booted it back, and an exciting scrimmage ensued, the Notts goal being in serious jeopardy until Cope volleyed the ball away. The County, playing with excellent method, pressed steadily for some time, Barry and Taylor in turn getting in superb centres, but the Liverpool backs cleared, and after Davis had shot high over the bar Taylor, with a chance to make headway, put the ball behind.

Rawlings and his partner made an incursion on the visiting right, the first-named lifting the ball into goal where Iremonger caught it safely and cleared, and Notts. swept down in line, McKinlay hurriedly kicking behind as Staniforth was heading straight for goal. The flag-kick was placed with nice judgment, Davis skimming the crossbar with a capital first time shot.

Another smashing attack by the home team followed, and succeeding to a pretty passing movement in which the inside forwards were concerned, David tricked Lucas smartly and essayed a brilliant shot which Scott saved at the second attempt in masterly fashion. A spectacular individual run by Baron carried him clean through the defence, and he finished up with a powerful oblique drive which Iremonger saved on his knees, the visitors afterwards failing to improve upon a corner. Liverpool hereabouts pressed heavily and Cockburn was yards too high with a long range effort.

Davis twice came into the picture in quick succession for clever footwork. Barry having a centre turned behind by McNab, and although Dinsdale shot behind from a corner Widdowson raced back and got in a hard drive which struck McKinlay’s legs and went for another corner.

A further attack by the County was frustrated, and Liverpool rushed back for Walsh to neatly head the ball back to Bromilow, who scored with a first time drive just inside the post at the end of 30 minutes, Iremonger colliding with the upright in his effort to save. The Notts, goalkeeper soon recovered, and his side made strenuous efforts to get on level terms, but their forwards were well held.

Taylor was applauded for a sparkling run and centre which Lucas took on his head but Davis immediately sprinted back and brought Scott to his knees with a low drive.
Kemp checked Hopkins smartly and although Liverpool attacked with superior method and Hopkins got the ball in front for Baron to head in from close range, Iremonger brought off a wonderful save at the expense of a corner which was not turned to advantage.

Just before the interval Notts. rallied in great style and Barry put in a square centre which McKinlay accounted for as both Staniforth and Widdowson endeavoured to get their heads to the ball.
Ashurst was penalised for pushing Hopkins and from the free kick Rawlings tested Iremonger with a cross shot which the keeper saved easily.
Half time: - Liverpool 1, Notts. County 0.
