Classic match

Steve Horton recalls memories of Liverpool's last FA Cup encounter with Yeovil from January 1935 when the Reds really turned on the style against the renowned giantkillers.

12th January 1935 Yeovil & Petters 2 Liverpool 6 (FA Cup 3rd round).

Sunday's tie isn't the first time we have met Yeovil in the FA Cup. In 1934-5 we went there for a 3rd round game when the home side were known as Yeovil and Petters. After suffering an early scare, we eventually ran out comfortable winners in front of a record crowd.

Struggling in the league, Liverpool faced a potential banana skin in the cup against the Southern League side which contained a number of ex professional players. Yeovil were in financial trouble and could have made a killing by switching the game to Anfield, but chose to keep home advantage on the sloping Huish pitch.

The Reds players prepared for the game with a walk along the promenade at Hoylake before making the journey south on the Thursday. Yeovil's last minute preparations included the installation of 100 extra seats in an attempt to squeeze as many fans in as possible.

Liverpool began the game nervously and found it difficult to cope with the slope. After just five minutes we were a goal down when McNeil scored after Parle had flicked on a corner. We hit back but Yeovil's keeper made a number of acrobatic saves and even clashed with the woodwork twice.

The home side weren't overawed and still attacked themselves, Taylor twice missing good chances when he was clean through on goal. Then the 1,000 Reds fans who had made the trip were finally given something to cheer just before half time when Berry Nieuwenhuys shot was turned into his own net by Price.

The equalising goal knocked the stuffing out of Yeovil and a minute into the second half we took the lead with a precise header by Vic Wright.

Our players had now mastered the slope and were passing the ball around far more accurately, with Alf Hanson being outstanding. Liverpool's superior fitness and professionalism showed as we scored three more goals in rapid succession. Gordon Hodgson got two and Syd Roberts got the other, with each of them being provided by Nieuwenhuys crosses.

McNeil got a goal back for Yeovil but there was no danger of a comeback as the Reds back line remained solid. Roberts made it 6-2 with the last kick of the game and both teams were given a well earned ovation by the 11,830 crowd, which beat the previous ground record of 10,000. For the Reds it was as good as it got in the cup that season, as we lost 1-0 at Blackburn in the next round.

Liverpool: Riley, Cooper, Tennant, Savage, Bradshaw, McDougall, Nieuwenhuys, Hodgson, Wright, Roberts, Hanson.

Yeovil: Lynch, Wood, Birks, Smith, Price, Parkin, Holbeach, Parle, Taylor, McNeil, Page.

Attendance: 11,830
