Yorke brace gives Villa the points

from "British Soccer Week"

Dwight Yorke, often overlooked by manager Ron Atkinson this season, ended the campaign on a high note with two second half goals after watching a frustrating first half from the sidelines.

Yorke produced the flair and finish previously missing from Villa's attack.

As a result of Yorke's two goal strike, Villa produced their first home win since beating relegated Swindon Town on February 12.

Liverpool dominated long spells of the first half, and were rewarded by a 17th minute goal from Robbie Fowler.

It was the youngster's 18th goal of the season and had been carved out by skipper Ian Rush following a neat, inter-passing movement.

Villa, following three successive defeats, continued to frustrate their fans with a lack-lustre opening 45 minutes, and it was only the introduction of Yorke and Bryan Small for Tony Daley and Stefan Beinlich respectively which resulted in the transformation.

Yorke, who has only started two league games this season, made an immediate impact, and was rewarded with a 65th minute equaliser.

Dean Saunders found space for the first time on the left following a pass from Andy Townsend, and the Welshman slid a low ball into the middle for Yorke to score from the edge of the six-yard box.

Yorke snatched Villa's vital winner nine minutes from time. Ray Houghton sent Yorke racing clear down the middle of the pitch, and the young striker scored with a low shot.

Ian Rush admitted: "We haven't given Merseyside much to shout about this season but, hopefully, the fact that Everton have survived will now act as a stimulus to both clubs and we can put the city back on the map."
