Liverpool held by Boavista

A superb first-half strike from Danny Murphy was not enough to earn Liverpool another away victory in the Champions League.

His well-flighted 16th minute free-kick was cancelled out by a towering header from Boavista striker Elpidio Silva.

And Boavista looked the more likely to prevail in the dying minutes as Armando Petit drove narrowly wide.

Both sides now face a nervy climax to the group phase, aware that they need a positive result to progress with Borussia Dortmund still in the frame.

Gary McAllister brought a fine save out of Ricardo Pereira in the first minute and had a goal disallowed five minutes later.

In between his attempts, Finnish defender Sami Hyypia limped out of the game with a thigh injury.

His departure gave Stephen Wright a rare appearance.

And the 21-year-old rewarded caretaker manager Phil Thompson with a solid European display.

Robbie Fowler, meanwhile, looked sharp up front and when he went down on the edge of the box, the influential Murphy claimed the free-kick, stroking it past the unconvincing dive of Ricardo.

Boavista made an early substitution, bringing on Martelinho for Rui Oscar, in an attempt to sharpen their attack.

But the Liverpool defence looked assured in Hyypia's absence and Silva's header against the bar was a rare first-half chance for the Portuguese league leaders.

Missed chance

Emile Heskey had a golden opportunity to double Liverpool's lead just after the interval following more good work from strike partner Fowler.

This time, however, Ricardo pulled off a magnificent save at point-blank range.

His intervention lifted the crowd's spirits and Boavista surged forward.

If Silva had served warning of his aerial prowess in the first half, he made good his threat on the hour.

Leaping highest at the back post, he steered a powerful header past Jerzy Dudek.

His goal preserved Boavista's unbeaten home record this season and subjected Liverpool to a difficult spell during which the home team searched for a winner.

It also ensured a nail-biting climax to a tough Champions League group.
