* Whichever team wins, Spain's record of 11 European Cup/Champions League titles will be equalled. England and Italy currently share second place on 10 each.

* If Liverpool win, England will join Spain on a record of 29 European titles in all major club competitions. A Milan victory would put Italy on 28 in joint second place with England.

* The match is the third European Cup/Champions League final to be played in Athens.

* Hamburg SV beat Juventus 1-0 in 1983 and Milan defeated Barcelona 4-0 in 1994. Athens also hosted a Cup Winners Cup final in 1987 when Ajax Amsterdam beat Lokomotive Leipzig 1-0.

* The match will be Milan's 300th in European competition, making them only the seventh club to reach this mark - behind Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Anderlecht. They have won 160 and lost 69. Should they score twice they will become only the sixth side to reach 500 goals. They have conceded 258.

* Liverpool's top European scorer is Michael Owen, now of Newcastle United with 21, one ahead of the retired Ian Rush and just two ahead of current Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

* None of Liverpool's three successful penalty-takers in the 2005 final in Istanbul will play in Athens. Dietmar Hamann, Djibril Cisse and Vladimir Smicer, all substitutes in that game, have all left the club since. Milan's Kaka will be the only player on the field to have scored from the spot in that final.
