Ipswich Town had left back Basil Acres a limping passenger for all but four minutes of the game - and this handicap proved too great.
Returning after spending five minutes off the field to have his right leg heavily strapped above the knee, he went on to the left-wing, and Jimmy Leadbetter - the side's scheming left-winger - found himself an emergency full-back.
While Acres was off, Ian Callaghan, Liverpool's quick-thinking 17-year-old right-winger, swung over a high centre and Dave Hickson rose high to head a brilliant goal.
Hickson's effort kept Liverpool in the talent money hunt - but for Ipswich it was their last chance.
The only consolation Ipswich now have is that they may achieve their highest position yet in the Second Division - their previous best is eighth - but even that will be touch and go.
Hero of the Ipswich side was the acrobatic Ray Bailey. His goalkeeping hasn't been better this season.
He made two brilliant saves from the quick-shooting Jimmy Melia, who must have wondered just what he had to do to beat the keeper.
But even Bailey must admit he was lucky in the 32nd minute when Hickson beat him with a low drive - only to see the ball strike the base of one post, fly across the goal and hit the other, before bouncing back into play.
