Hull are bumping up against inspired goalkeepers like Nigel Sims of Villa and now Bob Slater, Liverpool's Scotland 'B' man. The ball is not running for them. But to suggest that luck alone is their undoing would be to gloss over the obvious deficiencies in their attack.
Jackie Sewell, Ralph Gubbins and Roy Shiner are not paying dividends and that is the plain truth.
They are just that bit too slow against younger and keener opponents and were easy meat for stout defenders like Liverpool full-backs Ron Moran and Jack Molyneux.
The marksmanship is nothing to shout about either and in Hull's desperate second half rally the piledrivers that Bob Slater handled so majestically were from eager beaver half-backs Paul Feasey, Brian Garvey and Len Collinson.
Feasey and Garvey were outstanding.
Liverpool also had fine service from their halves, especially Tommy Leishman.
Liverpool winger Alan A'Court and Jimmy Melia (who scored the only goal in 31 minutes) started as though they would waltz through the Hull defence at will, but were soon in the grip of full-backs Andy Davidson and Brian Bulless, who deserved to pick up a spot of overdue bonus money for their best display of the season.
Hull could do with a couple of inside forwards like Jimmy Harrower and Roger Hunt - always niggling away and probing for an opening, moving the ball fast and accurately.
