There was a sensational start at Anfield with Liverpool taking the lead after the first attack.
Heighway ran onto a Sammels pass. Leicester's young goalkeeper Mark Wallington came out to challenge, bundled the forward in the back and the referee awarded a penalty. From this Lindsay gave Wallington no chance.
Play was concentrated in the Leicester half with Liverpool's quick moving attackers forcing City to work overtime in desperation. Callaghan, the strong man in midfield for Liverpool broke through swiftly to fire a fast shot and Wallington flung himself across the goal to make a brilliant save.
After 37 minutes City skipper, Keith Weller was booked following dispute over an offside decision.
Lindsay, who was pushing forward, was only inches off target with a glorious shot from 55 yards.
After 65 minutes Liverpool increased their lead with another penalty. Munro was adjudged to have handled and Cross was booked for arguing before Lindsay drove the penalty high into the net.
