Costly error by Minton

Liverpool set a fast pace, only to be met by a sound defence, with Albion determined to hang on to their First Division status at all costs.

Liverpool could not break through until the fourth minute when Albion had a lucky escape, Heighway dropping a corner short to Cormack, who shot from close range, Osborne was beaten but Wile cleared off the line.

Liverpool took the lead after 13 minutes, Heighway swept around Minton who ran after Heighway and brought him down. The referee immediately awarded a penalty and Keegan, who missed with a spot kick on the ground a fortnight ago, hammered it hard past Osborne.

Albion had an amazing escape after 24 minutes when Hughes raced across field to lay on a perfect pass for Cormack. From 30 yards Cormack hit a low shot which beat Osborne but struck the foot of the post and rebounded out to Osborne.

Albion rallied towards the interval due to the persistance of Hartford and Astle.

From midfield Johnston swung a deceptive ball through to the in-running Shaw but the ball swerved away. Shaw began to bring some life to the Albion attack but their move broke down rather disappointedly as the game became a little dreary.
