This match was almost cancelled after vandals broke into the stadium and carved a massive letter H into the pitch during the night before the match was due to be played, the H denoting support for prisoners who were on hunger strike in the Maze Prison in Belfast. However, after emergency re-turfing was carried out, the Liverpool FC party was able to fly into Dublin on the Saturday afternoon to fulfill the fixture in the evening.
