  • - I will never forget the day after Shanks' death, 30th September 1981. We were playing a 2nd leg European Cup tie against Oulu Palloseura at Anfield, having won the first leg 1-0 and we were 2-0 up at half time so the tie was over. For the second half the Kop chanted “Shankly, Shankly, Shankly” for the whole 45 minutes. I sat in the Main Stand and, once again, cried my eyes out. I can’t imagine what the Palloseura players must have made of an almost surreal experience. - John Martin.
