Southampton 1 - 0 Liverpool

Opposition goals

Notes

  • - Average age of the Southampton starting lineup: 28.21
  • Written by Steve Porter at The Giant Killers site: "These two had met in the competition the previous year when the then League Champions, Liverpool had ended Saints' cup run after the second division side had already beaten two top flight clubs. This time there was a place in the semi-finals at stake, with the Reds, who had yet to win the cup, expected to come through a tough fixture. It was the Saints who rose best to the occasion and deserved a victory that looked set to elude them until four minutes from time when Harkus was brought down when clean through to earn a free kick on the edge of the Liverpool area. Rawling's strike left Scott helpless and sent the Saints to their fifth semi-final. Liverpool could hardly claim to have been unlucky as their woodwork had saved them twice in the first-half while they played most of the second-half with a man advantage after Tom Parker was forced from the field injured."
