Goalkeeper Liam Hughes became part of Portadown's first team squad at the age of just fifteen in 2016/17. He then spent a season as back up keeper at Dungannon Swifts before joining Celtic in 2018, spending three years there without making a first team appearance. Liverpool snapped him up on the last day of the January 2021 transfer window and on 28 February he was on the bench at Sheffield United in the Premier League. This was due to Allison being left out on compassionate grounds and Caoimhin Kelleher being injured. Before the season was over he had been called up to the senior Northern Ireland squad, being on the bench for two World Cup qualifiers.
Hughes was loaned to Northern Premier League side Stalybridge Celtic for the second half of 2021/22, making ten appearances. For 2022/23 Hughes remained at Liverpool's Academy but didn't make a single appearance for the Under 21's and he was released at the end of the season. In January 2024, Hughes signed a two year deal with Finnish top flight side FC Haka.
