International XI: Bert Trautmann (Man City), Jimmy Armfield (Blackpool), Walton (Preston), Setters (Man Utd), Dugdale (Aston Villa), Don Revie (Leeds), McIlroy (Burnley), Nat Lofthouse (Bolton), Tommy Thompson (Preston North End), Sir Thomas Finney (Preston legend), Billy Liddell

Opposition Scorers: Nat Lofthouse, Billy Liddell 4'

    Gate Receipts: £6,340.

Sir Stanley Matthews (Blackpool) was scheduled to play but didn't participate. This was something Matthews did regularly: he would be billed to play in testimonials and benefit games so as to increase the crowd and revenue for the player concerned as he was the major draw in English football and would put thousands on the gate of any game in which he appeared. Matthews' absence meant Liddell had to switch to the opposition with Morrissey taking his place in the Liverpool team.

Liddell scored in the 4th minute with his side leading 1-0 at half-time before Hickson responded with a couple of goals. Nat Lofthouse equalised, but then A'Court and Hickson completed the scoring. Referee Arthur Ellis let the game run for a few extra minutes in an effort to get Liddell to round the game off with another goal, but Slater saved magnificently in the 96th minute much to Liverpool fans' dismay.
