Amazing Andrews

By Colin Wood of "Daily Mail."

The Anfield chorus, despite its variety of accents, was a glorious unison of praise to the speciality act. Unbelievable was the word for it from Jan Molby, the big Dane who was denied goals by it, Bruce Grobbelaar, the opposite number from Zimbabwe who admired it from the other end of the pitch, and the thousands of Scousers who gasped in astonishment at it and then applauded the performer off.

They pride themselves on knowing a good goalkeeper when they see one. Until a few years ago the club's telegraphic address was: Goalkeeper Liverpool. So England manager Bobby Robson should take notice of the latest in the Leicester line, Ian Andrews, who has not received further international recognition since he appeared for the England youth team.

Andrews will not be 21 until December 1, but he produced a performance that will live long in the memories of us lucky enough to witness it. He pulled off a series of stupendous saves, climaxed by swoop to his left to turn the ball from a few inches off the ground over the bar when Molby's thunderbolt of a free-kick was deflected. It ranks with the save Gordon Banks made from Pele in the 1970 World Cup finals. "I could not believe it," said Molby later. "And what about the one from me just before. That one was going at 200 mph."

Grobbelaar: "They love good goalkeepers here and he's won the hearts of all our spectators. He proved again that Leicester produce quality people in that position. He's in line with the greats like Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton." Andrews was not altogether happy, despite all the praise. He was disappointed that Leicester went away empty-handed. The did so ultimately because Ian Rush was in the right place at the right time just six minutes from the end to score the only goal with one of the softest shots of the game.
