Reds keep up pressure

Liverpool kept up their pressure on Manchester United by beating Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield. Sammy Lee was preferred to Ronnie Whelan and Kevin MacDonald continued in place of the injured Steve McMahon.
The Reds made a perfect start with a goal after only two minutes. Bradley's foul on Rush gave Liverpool a free-kick just on the edge of the area and Spink, expecting a rocket, was fooled completely as Jan Molby chipped the ball accurately into the opposite corner.

The home side continued to press until the interval with Villa dangerous on rare occasions. Much of Liverpool's approach work after the interval was brilliant with Johnston in great form.

At 67 minutes, Villa substituted Stainrod, bringing on Shaw and Liverpool scored immediately afterwards. A splendid pass by Molby set Walsh free on the left and the nimble striker cut inside before beating Spink with a fine low shot, for his 11th goal in as many games.

Molby and Walsh were involved in the third goal, nine minutes from the end, which saw Johnston round off a typical all-action performance with a cracking right-foot shot.
