Reds work hard for point
A Wednesday side containing several reserves had little ambition beyond survival and rarely ventured into attack, yet managed to share the points with a hard-working Liverpool side.
Wednesday gained their only corner of the game in the 3rd minute and from it Shutt scored. This was the prelude to a storming performance from the home side as they inexorably attacked the opposition goal.
From Johnston's back-header in 49 minutes, Ian Rush scored his first goal in nine games, firing past Hodge. The former Everton goalkeeper then saved a penalty from Molby, after Morris brought down Johnston.
Rush, Nicol and Johnston all went close, before Walsh, substituting for Dalglish, scored with only his second touch of the ball. With victory beckoning, a long ball down the middle was headed high in the air by Thompson, who hooked a shot past Grobbelaar, with three defenders looking on in disbelief.
Liverpool failed to win because they relaxed their efforts before securing the points.
Nevertheless, the expected rhythm was beginning to return, and Rush and Walsh were scoring goals. The only problem appeared to be at left-back, where Whelan looked uncomfortable in Beglin's usual position.
