All systems go

By Derek Potter of "Today"

Liverpool switched from cautious amber to flashing green for go in a second half display yesterday that signaled danger to the championship contenders.

Kenny Dalglish picked himself for the team again and supplied the craft, alongside the power of Jan Molby, Craig Johnston's pace and Steve McMahon's crisply hit two goals, the second following a Molby-Johnston raid of speed and directness in the 58th minute.

City were in contention in flashes only, yet Paul Simpson might have snatched a couple in the second-half and a goal-line clearance by Gary Gillespie to keep out a remarkable effort by Steve Kinsey after he chased a mistimed back pass by Jim Beglin.

Liverpool toyed Matador-style with a team that had conceded 18 goals in the last seven games yielding just two draws.

There was no sign of the kill until the 32nd minute, when Liverpool ended a spasm of untidy goalmouth play with a shot by McMahon drilled through a packed goalmouth.

It followed Liverpool's sixth corner and a surprisingly feeble span of finishing in which Dalglish, McMahon (twice) and the giant Dane Molby all wasted chances.

Despite all their first-half pressure, Liverpool made it easy for Siddall, the multi-club goalkeeper signed on loan for the rest of the season, and making his debut in City's colours.

Grobbelaar also had a quiet first span, not being tested once. Ten corners to nil indicated the extent of Liverpool's domination at the break.
