Anfield personalities: Tommy Smith

A native of this city, and a former Liverpool Schoolboys player, young Tommy has been with us since May, 1960, when he came as an amateur straight from school. He signed apprenticeship forms the following March, and last month, on attaining his seventeeth birthday, became a full-time professional.

A powerfully built lad for his age - he is just over 5. ft. 9. in, and close on 12 stones - he is showing considerable promise, being extremely good with his head and able to use either foot with almost equal skill. After progressing through the junior teams he was given his chance in the Central League team last season, making five appearances and proving his adaptability by occupying both defensive and attacking positions. The same versatility has been apparent again this season, during which he has been regular in the Central League eleven. He has figured at  right and left half, inside-left and centre-forward, and has played so well in all these positions that it is still difficult to say which will eventually prove his best. He is steadily gaining in experience, and like so may of his young colleagues on the staff, looks to have all the attributes necessary to make the top grade in due course.

From Liverpool's match programme on 30th April 1962.
