The Most Dramatic Matches of Liverpool’s Recent Seasons

Being a Liverpool supporter has always been associated with a lot of drama and memorable moments - moments that have been ingrained in the psyche of thousands of devoted Reds who show up to support their club each week.

Despite the club’s rich history and plenty of ups and downs, some fans argue that no period of Liverpool Football Club’s existence has been as unpredictable and full of drama as the last few years, especially those under Jürgen Klopp’s guidance.

While the past decade has seen the club lift two Premier League titles and clinch the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League title, long-standing supporters are often quick to remind their younger counterparts of the Istanbul magic of 2005, when Liverpool came back from 3-0 down against AC Milan to tie the game in regulation and ultimately win 3-2 on penalties.

Unpredictability is a part of the Liverpool DNA, and Klopp’s departure has done little to change that. Under Arne Slot’s leadership, the team is as primed for a comeback as ever - A trait that has created a continuous modern history of dramatic comebacks, passionate goal celebrations, and the occasional gut-wrenching feeling of late losses.

Regardless of which period of LFC history you remember most fondly, the past few years of the club’s history have doubtless been some of the most entertaining and unpredictable periods and have made countless young football supporters around the world fall in love with the Reds.

What Liverpool’s Dramatic Results Mean for the Club and Supporters

Few clubs combine chaos and success as well as the modern iteration of Liverpool FC. From the 2013/14 near-miss during the Brendan Rodgers era, to rediscovered success and Jürgen Klopp’s fierce competition with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, and now a more structured, but nonetheless entertaining style of play under Arne Slot, the Reds have formed a habit of constantly rediscovering themselves, while remaining in the conversation to win every title race they involve themselves in.

It has become quite a challenge for the younger generation of Liverpool fans to wrestle with the idea of their club consistently falling short of expectations and often even failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, even though that was the daily struggle for the club, which lasted a decade after that fateful 2005 Istanbul night.

Due to the sheer amount of dramatic results and late comebacks, Liverpool has not only become one of the global fan favorites but also cemented itself as one of the teams to consistently wager on if you are an avid punter. A whole list of top bookmakers compete to offer the best possible odds for Liverpool matches, knowing that millions of fans from all over the world will be watching them from the edge of their seats.

Nothing quite highlights the sheer thrill of being a Liverpool supporter like revisiting some of the most dramatic and unpredictable matches from the club’s recent Premier League and UEFA Champions League campaigns.

Late 4-3 Win Against Tottenham (2022-23 Premier League)

The 2022/23 Premier League campaign was a challenging one for Liverpool. Persistent injury problems and lack of form meant that the team lacked the lethality in front of goal that characterized the side throughout Klopp’s time as head coach.

However, despite the Reds finishing the season in 5th place with only 67 points to their name, the signature Liverpool theatrics were on full display on Matchday 34 against Tottenham Hotspur, who themselves also had a season to forget, ultimately finishing 8th and missing out on European football.

The game at Anfield started very convincingly for Liverpool, with the side already up 2-0 in five minutes after a quick opener from Curtis Jones, followed by a strike from Luis Diaz.

By the 15th minute, Mohamed Salah had made it 3-0 from the penalty spot, and Spurs seemed down and out. Harry Kane managed to pull one back in the 40th minute, but there was little hope for Tottenham Hotspur at halftime.

However, the game flipped on its head in the second half, with Spurs gaining momentum, but being unable to break down Liverpool’s defense until the 77th-minute goal from Son Heung-min, reducing the deficit to just one goal. A 93rd-minute goal from Richarlison had seemingly sealed the fate of the match at 3-3, but Diogo Jota answered back with a goal in less than a minute, ending the match in a 4-3 win for Liverpool

Penalty Shootout Drama Against Chelsea (2022 EFL Cup Final, Liverpool Win 11-10 on Penalties)

The 2022 EFL Cup final was another notably dramatic final played out between Liverpool and Chelsea, which ended 0-0 in regulation, after a tense match and several big chances exchanged by the two teams. Outstanding saves from Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy meant that Liverpool could not manage to break the deadlock in 90 minutes, with Chelsea having three goals disallowed for offside.

Extra time also failed to produce goals from either side, pushing the game to a penalty shootout.
Both teams managed to convert their first ten penalty kicks, which had the fans on the edge of their seats. When the score reached 10-10, Caoimhin Kelleher stepped up and scored his penalty, while Chelsea’s substitute goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga blazed his shot over the bar, leading to an 11-10 win for Liverpool, in what was a thrilling night and a record ninth League Cup title for the club. A nerve-wracking, but unforgettable finale for the Reds.

Liverpool 3-2 Atlético Madrid (2025-26 UEFA Champions League)

Klopp’s Liverpool is far from the only version of the Reds with a track record of dramatic matches. Arnet Slot’s side came up against Atletico Madrid in the League Phase of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League season on Matchday 1, viewed by many as the toughest challenge for Liverpool in the League Phase.

However, the match could not have started better for Liverpool. Andrew Robertson gave the Reds the lead in the 4th minute, followed by a 6th-minute goal by Mo Salah, giving Liverpool a 2-0 lead for most of the first half.
Marcos Llorente pulled one back for Simeone’s side in the dying minutes of the first half, making it 2-1 for Liverpool.

Mo Salah had another opportunity to score in the second half, hitting the post in the 64th minute. In the 81st minute, Marcos Llorente netted a brace with a sublime shot from the edge of the box, equalizing for Atletico Madrid.
However, Virgil Van Dijk, in true Liverpool fashion, buried the ball in the back of the net with a header in the 92nd minute, giving Liverpool the lead and winning the match at the death.

Conclusion

Last-minute winners, comebacks, and scoring against the odds have become synonymous with Liverpool's football in the modern era, and Arne Slot's side has more than shown they can continue Klopp's Liverpool while also grounding the team with a more pragmatic approach.

As seasons unfold, Liverpool’s matches are virtually guaranteed to be filled with late drama, stunning goals, comebacks, and a brand of entertainment rarely seen elsewhere in modern football.
