From Kenny Dalglish's diary

- From Kenny Dalglish's diary: "League football took a back seat today as we travelled to Ewood Park to meet Second Division Blackburn Rovers in the first leg of the Littlewoods Cup second round. Unfortunately, Gary Gillespie, who had suffered a calf injury at Newcastle and had been replaced by Nigel Spackman for the last 20 minutes, was still unfit, so Nigel continued at centre-back in an otherwise unchanged team, with Paul Walsh and John Wark the substitutes.

Earlier in the day one of our reserve centre-backs, Mark Seagraves, signed for Manchester City in a £100,000 move. It would have been wrong for us to stand in Mark’s way because we could give him no guarantees about a first-team future at Anfield. Now, at the age of twenty, he has an opportunity to make his mark in League football and I wish him luck. At Blackburn Steve Nicol found the net again, after half an hour! His goal put us in the lead and was his seventh in as many appearances this season, equalling his previous best whole season totals of 1983-84 and 1984-85. He scored three of his goals when playing left-back, and the last four in his role wide on the right. That just proves how valuable a player he is.

A lot more chances came or way but unfortunately we failed to take them; and Blackburn tied the game up when Scott Sellars equalized with a lunging header after 49 minutes. In an attempt to win the match we sent on Paul Walsh for Peter Beardsley for the final 15 minutes. A goal proved elusive, however, and the last scoring opportunity fell to Blackburn, when Grobbelaar was forced to save from Simon Garner. If we had accepted just a few of our chances the game would have been well won. Now it is all square going into the second leg."
