From Kenny Dalglish's diary

- From Kenny Dalglish's diary: "Charlton were the second team to visit Anfield; and, although they were without a win, we could not afford to take any chances. I told the players – and the media – that we could improve on Saturday’s display by sustaining that first-half performance through the full 90 minutes. The match turned out to be a marvellous evening’s entertainment and a great advertisement for the game. We found ourselves behind after just eight minutes when Garth Crooks – who scored the goal here in March 1985 that gave Tottenham their first Anfield win for seventy-three years - flighted the ball over Bruce Grobbelaar, who had come off his line. But within two minutes we were level. Charlton skipper Peter Shirtliff fouled John Aldridge to concede a penalty, which John put away in his usual composed style. Nobody watching the match would ever have guessed that Charlton were down at the wrong end of the table, propping up the First Division. Their football was sparkling and there were thrills and spills in both goalmouths.

A magnificent strike by Colin Walsh from a thirty –yard free kick put Charlton 2-1 in front after 59 minutes and we sent on Mark Lawrenson as substitute for Nigel Spackman. It was Mark’s first senior action since his achilles injury last March and his appearance released Steve Nicol to switch from left-back to right midfield. It was from Nicol’s cross that Alan Hansen headed a rare goal for our 71st-minute equalizer. Well done, skipper- your timing couldn’t have been better! It, was Hansen’s first goal in a competitive match for us since scoring at Coventry in May 1984. Two minutes later, we crowned a terrific fight-back: a long forward pass from Ronnie Whelan sent Steve McMahon through and he drew goa1keeper Nicky Johns off his line before firing our winner into the Kop net. Going 2-1 down at home is enough to give anyone palpitations. But our lads then proceeded to show their best football - the way they moved the ball around from man to man was better than I have seen for some time. Charlton must also be applauded for coming here with a positive approach, for wanting to p1ay and doing it in a highly commendable way."
