WHILE Liverpool’s travails have been all consuming for the past couple of months, spare a thought for someone who has suffered even more during that period.
Martin Kelly made a terrific first impression when he was thrust into the limelight against Lyon back in October and, in the 74 minutes he was on the pitch that night, emerged as the star man.
His performance was full of energy and commitment, he showed no nerves and looked set to become a handy addition to the squad, to provide cover for Glen Johnson and competition for Philipp Degen.
However, Kelly hasn’t been seen since due to the injury he sustained against Lyon; though it looked pretty innocuous, nothing more than a bang on his leg that would correct itself within a couple of days, it has proven much more serious.
There is still no date set for when Kelly might return to action and that is such a shame; given the way he played against Lyon, there would surely have been further opportunities for him to sparkle in the subsequent weeks and months.
All being well, it won’t be too long before Kelly – an England youth international who does not celebrate his 20th birthday until April – is on the road to recovery and able to build on that encouraging first start.
