Wheeler inspires a fight-back

Unpredictable, tantalising Liverpool did it again last night when they came from behind after floundering for an hour.

Bert Slater's great goalkeeping alone limited County to their first-half goal.

Then a short clearance from Tony Conwell in the 59th minute enabled Liverpool to crash back into a game which had seemed lost.

Billy Liddell pounced on the ball, centred, and Dave Hickson nodded it across for Roger Hunt to head his 17th goal of the season.

The man who sparked this glorious comeback was brilliant Johnny Wheeler.

Inspired

County, inspired by Tommy Powell and Ray Young, had looked winners from the fourth minute when, with Dick White out of position, Powell stroked the ball through for Peter Thompson to score at will.

Slater defied Derby almost single-handed until Liverpool's confidence was restored by that Hunt goal.

In the 63rd minute Ronnie Moran lashed a free-kick fast and low into the goalmouth for Alan A'Court to slip it into the net.

Then in the 68th minute Wheeler earned his reward with a splendidly taken right-foot shot from 20 yards.

Jimmy Melia and A'Court provided Hickson with a goal in 75 minutes. But really a margin of three goals flattered Liverpool.
