Hamann's stunner
DIETMAR HAMANN'S Liverpool career was on hold last night after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle that will sideline him for THREE months.
The £8m summer signing had the operation at home in Germany after X-rays had revealed he suffered a torn posterior ligament during the first half of the 2-1 weekend win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The loss of the influential playmaker is a massive setback for Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier following his painstaking close-season Anfield refit.
"It is a big blow for us," admitted Houllier. "Didi has torn his posterior ligament. He has had an operation and he will be out for between 10 and 12 weeks. He is disappointed, but he is naturally strong. He knows these things happen sometimes."
Hamann limped off after just 25 minutes of the victory at Hillsborough following a tackle from Gerard Sibon.
He had initially feared he would miss six weeks of the campaign following consultations with specialist Professor Hans Muller-Wolfhart who treated Michael Owen last month.
It is the second successive season that 25-year-old Hamann has seen his start wrecked by injury. Last term he sustained a knee injury for Newcastle United against Liverpool and was also forced onto the sidelines for three months.
Hamann's misfortune has offered Kop kids David Thompson, Steven Gerrard and Danny Murphy the opportunity for an extended first-team run starting against Watford at Anfield on Saturday.
