Liverpool crash as Hughes is marched

Birmingham started cautiously and Dave Latchford took a Callaghan cross from Keegan's head as Liverpool pressed.

Lloyd rose to head a cross from Callaghan after a free kick on the edge of the box, and Latchford grabbed the ball after it bounced sharply.

Seconds later Ray Clemence palmed a fierce drive from Campbell over the bar as Blues came forward.

Liverpool had the ball in the net after 35 minutes but the effort was ruled out because Lloyd fouled the Birmingham keeper.

Birmingham took the lead on halftime, Francis back-heeled to Page who crossed the ball into the area for Bob Latchford to smartly head home.

Ten minutes after the restart Hatton put the league leaders two down when he shot underneath Clemence.

Liverpool scored in the 60th minute and Emlyn Hughes was sent off near the end.
