1st Division

Anfield | Saturday 20 October 1979 at 15:00 UK local time

Liverpool 2 - 2 Everton
Half time 1–1

Notes

  • -Controversy reigned in the 70th minute when a hard tackle by Garry Stanley on David Johnson caused a mass brawl resulting in Terry McDermott and Everton’s Stanley becoming the first players to be sent off in a derby in the 20th Century. McDermott couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. “I made contact with Garry’s teeth - or vice versa. I’ve still got the scar on my hand today and the referee sent us both off. The irony was that Garry and I are good friends and we often used to go out for a drink together. That plus the fact that we were both just about the two softest players on the park. I remember sitting in the bath and laughing when I thought of all those hard men still running about out there, while us two softies had been sent off. I think it was for dropping our handbags.” The icing on the cake in this colourful game was when a female streaker ran the length of the field entertaining the crowd no end.
