As we draw ever closer to the Premier League final, the battle between Liverpool and Manchester City is well and truly under way. Meanwhile, the team are also doing their best to make history by winning four major titles in one season. That would certainly be an incredible achievement, but suffice to say that whatever they do from here, the current lineup will no doubt be remembered as one of the best the club has ever seen.
But what does the future of the team look like? And which players should we be keeping an eye on?
Liverpool’s greatest goal-scorers
When it comes to Liverpool’s goal-scorers, no discussion would be complete without giving credit to
Mohamed Salah. Salah has made
headlines this season with an astonishing 20 goals – five of which were penalty kicks – across 27 Premier League matches. The Egyptian team captain and Liverpool forward has always been an impressive goal scorer, and many are now wondering whether he will be able to maintain his performance going into next season.
Salah isn’t the only Liverpool player with a fair few goals under his belt in recent months, however. Diogo Jota is not far behind him on 14 goals, with Sadio Mané hot on his tail with 12.
All in all, Liverpool’s current lineup boasts a set of incredible players with a real future in the sport.
The best players to bet on
Of course, it’s not all about goal scoring, as anyone interested in football betting knows only too well. From assists to passes to aerials, the internet has given us the choice to bet on just about every aspect of a player’s game. According to Irish sportsbook specialist at
Irishluck.ie Shiobhan Aslett, at this point, if there’s a stat for it, the chances are you can place a bet on it. So, let's take a look through some of Liverpool’s best players, and where you should think about putting your money.
First of all, for a great passer, you’re looking at players such as Virgil van Dijk or Joel Matip. Both have spent over 2,000 minutes on the pitch this season and both have managed an almost 90% success rate.
We’ve already talked about goals – which are always a popular betting choice – but it’s also worth giving a thought to shots. After all, the more shots you take, the more likely you are to score goals in the first place. It should be no real surprise, therefore, that the highest average shots per game (4.2) goes to Mohamed Salah. He really has been a goal-scoring legend this season and many players are hoping it will translate into more success down the line.
Mané and Jota take fewer shots – averaging 3 and 2.6 respectively – but that still puts them near the top of the team, and both manage to be pretty consistent when it comes to outcome.
Not to sing his praises too much, but Salah isn’t just a great goal scorer. He’s also a great all-round player, and that means always being ready on the assists. He’s managed 10 this season, drawing for the number two spot with Andrew Robertson, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is just in front with 11.
Liverpool’s injury issues
Sadly, a discussion of the future of the current Liverpool lineup also means a discussion about injured players.
Liverpool have had to deal with a series of injuries this past season and many fans are concerned about how this could affect things in the long run.
Joe Gomez, who had to have surgery in late 2020 to correct an issue with his left knee, is back on the pitch and playing well, but he’s standing in as right-back for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has only recently returned to training after hamstring problems in the run-up to the international break.
Although his recent play has been superb, there are some worries about Gomez's future with the team after Alexander-Arnold returns to regular play, especially given that his contract is set to end in 2024. With that being said, Jurgen Klopp has clearly stated Gomez has “a lot of games” left to play for Liverpool, so it doesn’t look like he’ll be leaving the team any time soon.
Although this season is certainly going well for Liverpool, there’s no telling what the future will hold. That being said, all the players mentioned here have achieved great things in the sport and many of them will, no doubt, go on to surpass themselves.
If there’s one thing we can be sure about, it’s that we’ll get to keep seeing these incredible players at the top of their game for a long time to come.
