Liverpool hit Strømsgodset for 11 at Anfield

Liverpool opened their 11th European campaign with a record-shattering blitz of the Norwegian innocents of Strømsgodset last night. It carried new manager Bob Paisley’s team over the 10-0 record set by predecessor Bill Shankly’s side against Dundalk five years ago.

Strømsgodset chairman Josef Mathisen said: “They are the best team we have played against … better than Arsenal, who beat us years ago, and Leeds, who beat us last year. They were far too good for us amateurs.”

It left Paisley saying: “It’s a bit embarrassing, but then if we had messed around people would have said they did not get value.”

The match started badly for the Norwegian when they foolishly conceded a penalty in two minutes. Eventually nine members of the Liverpool line-up put their names on the score sheet. The odd men out were goalkeeper Ray Clemence and midfield man Brian Hall.

Defender Thompson said: “In the second half I was confused about all the goals. I even had a chat with Emlyn Hughes to try to work out what the score was.”

Goalkeeper Inge Thun was the culprit when Liverpool were awarded that early penalty. He ran out to stop Tommy Smith and Maltese referee Edwin Borg immediately pointed to the spot. After 12 minutes Phil Boersma scored the second. Phil Thompson ran forward for a fine third goal after 29 minutes. Boersma hit his second goal of the match – and his eight of the season – after 34 minutes. Then, three minutes before half-time, Steve Heighway stepped into the scoring act to make it 5-0.

There was a Liverpool lull until the 65th minute, and the Norwegians even threatened Clemence’s goal on a few occasions. Then Peter Cormack was on target with a simple chance after the goalkeeper turned Ray Kennedy’s header aside. Defensive partners Thompson and Emlyn Hughes registered with headers after 73 and 76 minutes. In the last five minutes Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan, and Ray Kennedy all scored to carry the club to their new record.
