Welshman Neco Williams got his first start for Liverpool's first team in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal at Anfield on 30 October 2019 due to Ki-Jana Hoever's absence on international duty with Holland at the U17 World Cup, Neco has been at Liverpool since 2009 and is a highly-regarded right-back. "I started when I was six-years-old at the pre-academy and when I was nine I had the choice to go to Liverpool or Manchester United,” Neco told leaderlive.co.uk as he signed a professional contract for Liverpool in January 2019. “It was hard because me and the family are all United supporters but now being at Liverpool all these years I’ve turned into a Reds fan. I was playing for my local team Cefn United at the time and I was at a tournament when three or four scouts came up to my dad asking about me and wanting me to go on trial. I was a striker then but then I became a right-winger and then changed to right-back when I was 16. With Liverpool being a right-back isn’t just about defending, it’s just as much about attacking, so you’re more like a right-winger and I would say crossing is one of my strongest assets.”
In the second half of 2019/20 Williams continued his progress, playing the full ninety minutes of all four A Cup games that the Reds were involved in. He played a major part in the winning goal against Shrewsbury in a fourth round replay at Anfield, his cross being headed into his own net by a Shrewsbury player. When the season resumed in June following the suspension due to Covid 19 Williams started three of the remaining nine games and came on as a substitute in another three to earn a title medal. In September he also got his first two international caps for Wales, scoring an injury time winner against Bulgaria in a Nations League game at Cardiff.
The form of Trent Alexander Arnold meant that Williams had to remain patient in 2020/21, making just eight starts in all competitions, two in the Champions League. He continued to progress at international level too, making the Wales squad for the European Championships, where he started one game and came on as a substitute in two others. On 31 January 2022, Neco Williams joined Fulham on loan for the remainder of the 2021/22 season. He impressed there, scoring twice in fourteen appearances as they were promoted back to the Premier League. Williams was sold to Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest for £17m on 11 July 2022. Barring injury, Williams was a regular for Forest over the next two seasons, scoring on his return to Anfield in April 2023, a match Liverpool won 3-2. During 2024/25 Williams switched from right to left back and missed only three league games all season as they qualified for Europe. He agreed a new four year contract, posting on Instagram "Grateful for the trust the club has shown in me and the support from everyone around me! The work doesn’t stop here. Excited for what’s ahead this season in Europe and the Premier League."
