The Toxteth terror is dynamic and energetic, capable of running the midfield from deep or influencing the game higher up. Then Liverpool's U-18 coach, Steven Gerrard, built his team around Jones: “He’s a top talent and he’s a top player," Gerrard said. "It’s important he gets on the ball as much as he can because he makes us play. He’s got that quality to create something out of nothing." The Scouser was drafted to train with the first team in the 2017/18 campaign and was an unused substitute in the Merseyside derby on 7 April 2018. With many players returning late for pre-season training due to World Cup commitments, Jones was a regular during the warm-up games to the 2018/19 season and impressed with his lively displays. Jones made his first-team debut when Liverpool lost to Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup on 7 January 2019. The Scouser signed a long-term contract with Liverpool in August 2019. Jones told Liverpoolfc.com: “For me, it’s massive. Being a local lad, my dream is to play for this amazing club. To see that the manager and staff have got the belief in me and have offered me a new contract, I’m absolutely buzzing."
Jones will remember 30 October 2019 forever. Liverpool faced Arsenal in the Carabao Cup and with the scores 5-5 after 90 minutes, the match went straight to penalties. Divock Origi was set to take Liverpool's fifth penalty and Curtis the fourth but he asked Divock to switch with him when they were in the centre circle. Klopp didn't have a clue and was surprised to see Divock go fourth. Curtis changed the flow of the game when he came on in the 55th minute when Liverpool were 4-2 down. He showed remarkable confidence for an 18-year-old to take on the responsibility of taking Liverpool's fifth penalty in front of the Kop. The Toxteth boy cooly dispatched Liverpool into the quarter-finals. What dreams are made of for the Scouser! "Being a local lad, it's always been my dream to get an appearance at Anfield, Curtis told BBC Radio 5 Live post-match. "To get an assist to give us a chance and then to score a penalty is just a dream come true. I was calm, I picked my spot and I was fortunate enough that the winning penalty went in. This is just the beginning." Jones' first Premier League appearance came on 7 December 2019 when he came on for the last fifteen minutes of the 3-0 victory at Bournemouth. Another highlight of Curtis Jones' fledgeling career came in the third round of the FA Cup on 5 January 2020 when the Scouser scored a fantastic winner against Everton at Anfield. Klopp underlined his admiration of the 18-year-old midfielder after the match. "He's an unbelievable player," Klopp said. "A Scouser, very confident, can't wait to play in the first team. He has made big steps. He will be a Liverpool player if nothing strange happens, 100 per cent."
After the resumption of the 2019/20 season due to the delay caused by Covid 19, Jones featured in four of the nine games that were played behind closed doors. He came off the bench and got his first goal in a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield and his first league start was against Burnley on 11th July. 2020/21 began behind closed doors and Jones was a 66th minute substitute on the opening day against Leeds at Anfield. He followed this up with a man of the match performance against Lincoln City in the League Cup, scoring twice in a 7-2 win at Sincil Bank. Throughout the season he continued to grow in stature, scoring his first Premier League goal in a 2-0 victory at Sheffield United on 28th February. By the end of the campaign he had started thirteen games, coming on as a substitute in a further eleven.
During 2021/22, fifteen of Jones' 27 appearances were in the Premier League, netting one goal in a 3-3 draw at Brentford. The following season, 2022/23 was frustrating initially and he made just one start in the first 27 league games. However he was given a chance in central midfield at Chelsea on 4th April and went on to start all of the remaining games of the season, in which the Reds were unbeaten. He scored three goals, including two in a 3-0 win at Leicester. He was then included in England's squad for the European U-21 Championships, scoring the winning goal in the victory over Spain in the final.
2023/24 was much more productive for Jones, who made every matchday squad that he was available for. One of his absences was for a harsh three match suspension sustained for a red card at Spurs, while the others were for an ankle sprain and thigh problems. In total he played 36 times in all competitions, scoring five goals including a brace in a 5-1 home win over West Ham in the EFL Cup quarter final. He was called up to Gareth Southgate's preliminary England squad for Euro 2024, but failed to make the final 26. Jones played a meaningful role in Liverpool’s 2024/25 campaign, even as several high-profile midfielders occupied the first-choice spots. He made 46 appearances across all competitions, with 19 of those coming from the bench, often brought on to provide energy and fresh legs in the later stages of matches. Jones contributed three goals, highlighting his timing and knack for arriving in the right place at the right moment. He was also a reliable presence in games where starters were rested or unavailable, offering the squad depth and flexibility that proved important over a long season.
